Delete and Recreate Third Party Tool (LTI) Assignments Copied into New Course Shells

This article is for Faculty who are working with learning tool interoperability (LTI) assignments from a current term imported into Canvas course shells for upcoming terms. Third party external tools such as: Turnitin, GoReact, and LinkedIn Learning must be deleted and re-created once copied to course shells for the next term.  Learning tool interoperability or (LTI) external tools added as the submission type to Canvas assignments are tied to a course's term and student submissions in the grade book. Course copied (LTI) assignments that are not deleted and recreated in new courses will display error messages for your students.  


1. Review and Identify LTI Assignments in Your New Course

The Modules tab can be found in the Course Navigation to the left in Canvas.

With your cursor, highlight and copy (PC- Cntrl + C/ Mac - Cmd + C) all the instructional text on the assignment page. Additionally, if your assignment has a lot of text, select the gray Edit button. Then click into the (RCE) rich content editor, select all the text (PC - Cntrl + A / Mac - Cmd + A) , and then copy it to your clipboard. Paste your assignment instructions (PC - Cntrl + V / Mac - Cmd + V) to a Word or Google doc for your records.

Highlight all hte text in the rich content editor and copy it.

If you chose the Edit button to select all your instructional text, select Cancel or Save in the bottom right corner after successfully copying and pasting your assignment instructions to another document for your records.

2. Recreate LTI Assignments in Your New Course

2.1. Select the + Icon to the Right of a Module Where You want to Add a New LTI Assignment

(1) Select Create Assignment, (2) name it, then (3) choose Add Item.

2.2. Select the Edit button inside the New Assignment

Click into the (RCE) rich content editor and (1) paste (PC - Cntrl + V / Mac - Cmd + V) in your assignment instructions you copied (PC- Cntrl + C/ Mac - Cmd + C) from your external doc. (2) Scroll down to Submission Type.

2.3. Choose External Tool as the Submission Type from the Drop-down Menu

LinkedIn Learning opens a pop-up menu in Canvas. Type in the name of the video you want students to watch in the search bar. LinkedIn will generate results based on your search query. Select the Add button beside the video you want students to watch. Then select Confirm to connect to your Canvas assignment.  

Note you must have already logged into LinkedIn for this to show.

By default, LinkedIn Learning videos (like most LTI external tool assignments) are loaded in a new tab and require selecting the gray load button to launch.

To disable this and have the video play inside your assignment, select Edit Assignment Settings.

Scroll down to Submission Type, then de-select the check box for "Load This Tool in a New Tab." Scroll down and select Save.

The LinkedIn Learning video will now load inside Your Canvas assignment.
