Note that Turnitin's Draft Coach will not work with .DOCX Microsoft Word file extensions in Google Docs. If you want to work with content on a .DOCX Word file extension inside of Google Docs using the Turnitin Draft Coach tools, you must copy the .DOCX content to a blank Google Doc to use the tool. Additionally, you can select File inside the .DOCX, and choose Save As, then select Google Doc. This will create a Google Doc in addition to the original .DOCX.
Inside the Google Doc, select the (1) Extension Tab, (2) Turnitin Draft Coach from the Drop down, and (3) pop- out menu as shown below
Your instructor may ask or require you to share your Google Doc draft with them. If this is the case, select (1) Share, add the instructor as (2)Editor, (3) change the General Access to Anyone with link. Select (4) Done to update sharing settings. If you are working on a group assignment, add your group members to your Doc with Editor permission as well.
2. Using the Citation and Grammar tools while writing your assignments in Google Docs
2.1. Viewing Turnitin Draft Coach tools
On the right panel of your Google Doc, as shown below, you will see the Turnitin Draft Coach tools: Similarity check, Citation check, and Grammar guide.
The Turnitin Coach citation and grammar tools are meant to be used while you are writing, and can be especially helpful when you are required to write papers containing outside and peer reviewed sources in a specific writing style such as MLA or APA.
2.2. Working with Citation Check
Once you have worked on your paper and have some content you would like to check for proper use of a writing style, select Go to Citations from the Citations Check Box, as shown below.
From the "Run Citations Check" panel that appears, shown below, select Run Citations Check.
While the Citation Check is running, do not try to type in your document or do any other tasks on your computer.
Citation Check will examine your paper and detect what (1) writing formating style you are using and generate a report in a matter of seconds. See the example report shown below. The Citation tool calculates the number of citations and references you have inside your paper. The (2) Issues section shows you any Citation issues in the paper. In this case, there are three references that are not cited in the body of the paper.
Select a Reference with no citation text link
The following will be displayed: (1) the reference citation, and (2) the reason why it was brought to your attention.
Select the Show Guidance link to get feedback on how to improve as you revise your work
Read the guidance message and then apply the feedback to your draft. Select Hide Guidance to collapse the message.
Access the All References drop down with the arrow in the red box shown below. The image below shows you all the outside sources listed in your references page, and in this case shows references that may be missing their corresponding in-text citations in the paper.
Citation checks are unlimited and you can run them as many times as you like while you are writing and revising your work.
2.3. Working with the Grammar Guide in Turnitin Draft Coach
Turnitin's Grammar checker will only provide a report for the first 100,000 characters of your document, roughly 1,600 words. Turnitin recommends splitting your draft into separate documents if your paper exceeds 1,600 words.
From the top of the Turnitin Draft Coach tab on the right hand side, select the Grammar tab to continue.
Selecting the Run Grammar Check button will analyze your document for errors in grammar, usage, mechanics, and structure.
While the Grammar Check is running, do not try to type in your document or do any other tasks on your computer.
The Grammar report is generated. See the example below. The (1) text is highlighted in your paper which corresponds to (2) issues and green links on the right in Your Grammar Guide. Select and read about how to revise the issues by choosing the green words in the (2) issues section.
Select the green link beneath the name of the issue to see more information.
Grammar Check shows (1) the issues highlighted darker in the text. The (2) The feedback regarding the issue is bolded. On the right hand side, using (3) the < > icon, you can toggle left and right through all of the instances of the issue and revise your work.
Grammar checks are unlimited and you can run them as many times as you like while you are writing and revising your work.
3. Applying the Similarity Check tool when you have finished your paper.
After revising the formatting and grammar of your paper, select the blue Go to Similarity link in the Similarity Check tool box to the right of your Google doc, as shown below.
Select the Run Similarity Check button to continue.
A message lets you know you will have two more attempts to run the Similarity Check on this document. Select the Confirm button to continue.
Turnitin strongly suggest that you make an effort to not use your checks all at once. Spread them out to help you improve your writing and citations over multiple drafts.
While the tool processes your document, do not alter your text while the check is running. You may even get a yellow pop up (not shown here) saying it may take a few minutes to complete. This is a good time to get up and take a short walk or take a study break.
The Similarity report will show in the right hand panel. Below is an example. There will be (1) an overall Similarity score at the top, (2) a list of sources ranked by percentage of similarity to your paper.
The Overall Similarity percentage in (1) is not a measure of the amount of plagiarism in a document. Turnitin calculates the similarity score by dividing the number of matching words by the total number of words in the document. Human judgement should always be used to determine if this value is acceptable - Source (Turnitin Draft Coach Document Tour).
Looking below, select the blue What should I do with my score? link to read suggestions for how to decrease your similarity score.
Turnitin Draft Coach offers you scenarios you can select to read more about what high and low similarity scores mean and what you can do to improve your writing. Select a button to read more.
Three suggestions are provided in the case you think your Overall Similarity score is too high, which are shown below. Select the < Back arrow to return to the previous panel.
Select the < Back to Similarity Check link to return to the main Similarity Check panel.
Select the source at the top of your list with the highest percentage of similarity to continue.
Looking below, selecting any of the sources will show highlighted text in your paper that is similar to the source listed. You can see that the (1) highlighted text in the paper on the left does not match the (2) highlighted text in the right panel - they are merely similar, and this is not an instance of plagiarism.
Looking at the image below from the Similarity score panel in your Doc, select the View Full Report button at the bottom.
You may encounter a pop-up menu asking you if you would like to take a short tour of Turnitin's Document viewer. Select the Let's Go button to get an overview of the features in the Document Viewer and read about how the Similarity Check works.
Like the right hand side panel of Turnitin Draft Coach in your Google doc, the right panel in the Document Viewer allows you to select a source (in this example I chose tandfonline) and view additional information about the similarity of passages in the paper. See the image below for an example. The blue highlighted text on both sides is identical. The text in the paper (in the red box) meets most of the requirements for a direct quote in APA. The quote is preceded by the author's names, the passage being directly cited in-text is surrounded by quotation marks, does not exceed forty words, and the parenthetical citation is listed at the end. The only missing piece is the page number from which the direct quote was pulled from the journal article, which goes at the end of the parenthetical citation. See: https://apastyle.apa.org/ to learn more about APA style. This example is not an instance of plagiarism, but just a match of text to Turnitn's database entries.
Looking at the image below of a much higher percentage of similarity from one source, (32%), we can see the text highlighted on both sides is also exactly the same. In this example there is no indication of using a writing formatting style like MLA or APA. The text is not preceded by an author's name, there are no quotation marks surrounding the passage, nor is there a parenthetical citation noting the year and page number the passage was taken from. Avoid long un-cited passages like this in your writing, and use the Similarity Check and Citation check tools in Turnitin Draft Coach to assist you give credit to the authors and research publications you cite for your research papers.
4. Download and Submit your Full Similarity Check Report to your Canvas assignment.
Your professor may require you to submit or request to see your Similarity Report for your written assignments.
