Submit a Turnitin Assignment on Canvas

This article is for students who need to submit a Turnitin Assignment on Canvas.


1. Access Your Turnitin Assignment

Navigate to Modules from the course navigation menu.

Select your Turnitin assignment.

You may need to open Turnitin in a new window.

2. Submit Your Assignment

2.1. View Turnitin Settings

Learn about Turnitin Draft Coach to check your similarity score, citations, and grammar before submitting an assignment.

Select the arrow next to the assignment title to view assignment instructions, availability dates, and similarity report settings.

In the example below, the instructor has disabled student access to similarity reports.

In the next example, the instructor has enabled student access to similarity reports.

2.2. Preview and Upload Your Assignment

Select the Upload Assignment button.

By default, the upload tab is selected. You can also input text or select a file from your cloud storage. If you are uploading a submission, drag it to the Submit File box or use the Choose File finder, select a file from your device, and select Open.

If necessary, change the submission title.

Select Upload and Review.

You will have a chance to preview your assignment. Then select Submit to Turnitin.

Turnitin will display a green check mark if your submission was successful.

If your instructor allows multiple submissions and you would like to resubmit an assignment, use the upload icon to upload a new submission. This will replace your original submission on Turnitin.

3. View Your Submission

3.1. View Your Submission in Turnitin

Once you have submitted your assignment to Turnitin, you may or may not be able to view its similarity report. In the example below, the similarity report is not available to students.

If the Similarity column is blank, try reloading your page. If it is still not available, check the assignment details to learn when a similarity report will be generated.

In the following example, a similarity report is available. The text was original, so the similarity score is 0%.

In the next example, a similarity report is available for students. Most of this assignment matches another text, so the similarity score is high. Select the percentage to view Turnitin's feedback studio for the assignment.

A window with additional details will open. Select (1) the comment icon to view instructor comments and (2) the similarity score to view any similarity matches. The example below contains a large amount of matching text, which is highlighted in red.

3.2. View Your Grade in Canvas

To view your grade, go to the Grades link from the Canvas course navigation menu.

Scroll down and select the assignment.

Your (1) assignment points, (2) similarity score, and (3) any feedback from your instructor will be available on the submission details page for the assignment.
