This article is for CSUEB faculty new to the Canvas Learning Management System who are working with their Blackboard migrated quiz content inside Canvas for the first time. This article will illustrate the basic settings, editing capabilities, moderation and accommodation features available in Canvas' Classic and New Quiz Engines.
Article Overview
If you have imported Quiz content from a past enrolled Blackboard migrated course, your Quizzes will be available in Canvas in the "Classic quiz" engine by default.
1. Editing a Classic Quiz
A Classic Quiz viewed from your Quizzes area in Canvas or within a Module you link it to will display a clear rocket ship icon as shown below. Select the name of the quiz to proceed.
The image below shows:
(1) the title of the quiz,
(2) a description box where you will instruct your students on how to navigate through the quiz,
(3) the Preview and
(4) Edit buttons,
(5) current quiz settings (configurable by selecting the Edit button), and
(6) an option to Moderate This Quiz.
Clicking the (4) Edit button will enable you to:
Name the Quiz, Type a description of the content the quiz/exam will cover, configure most of the settings in (5).
(3) Preview allows you to view how students will navigate through your quiz.
(6) Select Moderate This Quiz to enter extra time and attempts for certain students who require extra time/attempts on a quiz
Looking at the image below, select Edit to access your quiz settings and questions.
Looking below, you will be able to (1) name the quiz, and (2) type your instructions for your students.
Scroll down some more and select the arrow on the Quiz Type box to see your options.
Selecting the arrow for the Assignment Group Box will allow you to link the quiz with an assignment group you create in the Assignments tab in Course Navigation.
You can (1) allow multiple attempts, (2) allow students to see their incorrect answers, and (3) set when students can see their correct answers.
Set your quiz availability dates in the (4) Assign box. (5) choose Save to update your quiz settings.
If you need to provide additional time for students with Accessibility accommodations, you must select the +Add button, select the student in the Assign to box, and enter more time inside the Until box.
Looking below, selecting (1) Edit inside your classic quiz, then choosing the (2) Questions tab will allow you access to your Classic quiz questions area.
Hover your cursor over the (3) pencil icon inside a question box to edit your quiz questions.
Inside the Edit view of a Classic quiz question, you can do the following: (1) edit the name, (2) change or choose question type, (3) choose point value, (4) compose question text, and (5) add and delete correct and incorrect answers for individual quiz questions in the Answers section.
As shown below, choose the (6) pencil icon inside the text box of a correct or incorrect answer to edit the answer text and choose (7) Done when finished editing an individual question.

(10) Scroll down further and select (11) Save to update your Classic quiz edits across all questions within the quiz.
2. Working with the "Moderate This Quiz" feature in Classic Quizzes
Keep in mind that inside the Classic quiz engine, Moderation settings for adding extra attempts must be set up per each individual quiz. New Quizzes supports global accommodation settings for specified students across all your New Quizzes in Canvas.
Select Moderate This Quiz option in the upper right hand corner of your Classic quiz.
Selecting the pencil icon to the far right of a student's name will allow you to add extra attempts for a student and must be set up per each individual quiz.
If an exam is available for a very limited amount of time or only available for the time limit, different availability times that exceed the original Due date must be set up via the Assign box in the Classic Quiz Edit area.
Enter an Extra Attempt in the pop-up box. Choose Save to update quiz Moderation settings for each student. Note that the extra attempt is entered in the box to the right marked attempts. In this example, the student was assigned a total of two attempts.
To Assign a student additional time for a Classic Quiz, select the Edit button on a Classic Quiz main page.
Scroll down to the Assign box and select the +Add button, select the student in the Assign to box, and enter more time inside the Until box. The Until box in this example was set to 9:08 AM, two minutes longer than everyone else was assigned. For "Everyone Else" the quiz will lock at 9:06 AM, while Sidney has two additional minutes. This example shows a quiz that is available only for the time allowed to take it.
Select the Save button in the bottom right corner to save your settings.
Your settings will be visible on the Quizzes main page as shown below. Note that your time extension settings for students will be displayed here.
Note that when time is about to expire for all students, they will have a warning message pop-up notifying them that their time will soon expire. The pop-up appears the last ten seconds of time remaining in the Until date and time set for students in the Assign box in Edit mode.
3. Editing a New Quiz
Begin by first accessing the (1) Quizzes link in Course Navigation.
We can easily Migrate the Classic Quiz we were just working on to a New Quiz by selecting the kebab icon to the far right of the quiz.
Choose Migrate.
This will generate a copy of the classic quiz at the bottom of your quizzes area which you can work with in the New Quizzes interface. New Quizzes are marked with a green rocket ship when published,
and a gray rocket ship for an unpublished New Quiz. By default, classic quizzes are migrated to Unpublished New Quizzes.
Additionally, if you would like to create a New Quiz from scratch, you can choose (2) + Quiz in the Quizzes area of Canvas, then select the (3) "New Quizzes" engine.
Looking below, click into the text of the New Quiz to proceed.
You will see options to (1) name the quiz, (2) edit the point value, (3) choose the assignment group, (4) display grade as, and (5) set Assign dates.
The Submission Type for New Quizzes is set by default to the New Quizzes LTI and is not user configurable.
Scroll down to the bottom right hand side of the page and select Build to proceed to edit your quiz.
Inside the Build area of a New Quiz, selecting the pencil icon to the far right of an editable field will allow you to: (1) name the quiz, (2) edit the instructions, and (3) edit the question and possible correct and incorrect answers for a question by selecting the text or the pencil. Selecting the (4) blue circle with the + icon will allow you to add additional questions of different types.
Looking at the image below, selecting the pencil icon on an individual question shows the following: (1) edit the question name, (2) select the radio button of the correct answer, and add Answer Feedback for each of the answers via the dialogue boxes on the far right. (3) Choose the point value, and (4) leave student feedback for a correct answer, an incorrect answer, and general feedback (regardless of answer). Select (5) Done to save question settings.
Note in the image below the icons to the far right of each question: selecting (1) the pencil icon allows editing, selecting (2) the + icon allows you to duplicate the question, (3) selecting and dragging the eight dots allows you to reorder the questions, selecting the (4) the trashcan enables the user to delete a question.
4. Moderation and Accommodation in New Quizzes
If your Quiz/Exam is only set for students to take for an hour or less during a single day and you have students needing additional time after that hour or less time frame, you must set up additional Assign to boxes in the main edit page for those students requiring extra time.
Looking below, (1) scroll to the top of the Build page of your New Quiz and select the (2) Moderate button from the upper left side.
The New quizzes Engine allows faculty to (1) provide additional time on all New Quizzes in the course by selecting the pencil icon under the Accommodations heading. Faculty can offer more time and attempts per quiz by selecting the (2) Moderate button.
Selecting the pencil icon to the right of a student's name in the Moderate view, then selecting "Give additional Time" brings up this pop-up window below. Choose Save to update Accommodation settings per each student.
Set Accommodations per each student who require extra time in New quizzes if you have many quizzes/exams you are administering throughout the term.
Looking below, we can select the Moderate button to the far right of a student's name and have a pop-out menu appear to select: (1) additional attempts, and (2) adding additional time or a time multiplier from the time adjustments drop down.
In the case that an exam is available for a very limited amount of time or only available for the time limit, different availability times that exceed the original Due date must be set up via the Assign box in the New Quiz Edit area. If your Quiz/Exam is only set for students to take for an hour or less during a single day and you have students needing additional time after that hour or less time frame, you must set up additional Assign to boxes in the main edit page for those students requiring extra time.
