Create a GoReact Assignment in Canvas

Updated on

Please note that you cannot use GoReact assignments that were copied over to your next term's Canvas courses. GoReact assignments are linked to a term's course ID. When the term ends, the GoReact assignments are inactive and will not work if copied over to a new course for an upcoming enrollment.

This article is for faculty who want to set up a gradable GoReact assignment that students can submit to in Canvas.

1. Create an Assignment

The Modules tab can be found in the Course Navigation to the left in Canvas.

1.2. Add a Module Item

Choose the module to add the assignment to and click the plus symbol to the right of that module.

1.3. Create an Assignment

Choose to add an Assignment and Create Assignment. Give the new assignment a name and finally Add Item.

IMPORTANT: Make sure you have selected to add an Assignment, this will create the corresponding column in the course's Grades that is integrated and connected to the GoReact assignment. Selecting External Tool on this step will not create columns in Grades!

1.4. The new assignment has been added to the module.

Assignment has been added to the module

The assignment has been created, but it has not been linked to GoReact yet.

We will set up the link between Canvas and GoReact by modifying the Submission Type in Part 2 below.

2. Change the Assignment Submission Type to GoReact.

2.1. Open the Assignment

Open the assignment by clicking on its name inside of the module.

Assignment Settings

2.2. Edit the Assignment Settings

Edit the assignment by clicking on the Edit button on the top right.

Add your assignment specific recording and feedback instructions inside the Rich Content Editor (RCE).

Add the Total number of Points the GoReact Assignment will be worth. This is important to set up on the Canvas side because this will push to GoReact and student submissions you grade in GoReact will appear in the Canvas Grade book.

2.3. Change the Submission Type to GoReact.

Change the Submission Type to External Tool by clicking on the dropdown box.

Click the Find button in the Submission Type box.

Change the Submission Type to GoReact.

Scroll down to (1) choose GoReact from the list of External Tools that has popped up. (2) Click Select.

Select Turnitin as the external tool

Note: Check the "Load This Tool In A New Tab" option. This option is shown in the student version of working in GoReact assignments in Canvas and is preferable for students because they have their entire screen as a workspace to record and edit their GoReact submissions.

Finalize and Save the Link Between Canvas and GoReact.

Save the assignment by scrolling down and clicking on the button on the bottom right of the page. The assignment is now linked to GoReact.

Turnitin is now linked

Now that the GoReact assignment has been created, continue to Step 3 below to configure important assignment properties, such as points!

3. Configure GoReact Assignment settings.

Note:" if you chose "Load This Tool In A New Tab" when selecting the Submission Type, you will click the gray load button to configure assignment settings.

Click the Assignment to load and configure settings in a new browser window.

3.1. Enable Presenter Slides in Your GoReact Assignment

The following eight steps display the box to check in the Assignment settings and the student experience for setting up their GoReact recording using PDF slides. Select Grading & Evaluation to jump to step 4.

Choosing Presenter Slides will allow students to upload PowerPoint presentation files converted into PDF format into GoReact. This is most useful for students who are only using a laptop and have no other screen to share slides with when needing to record a speech with visual aids in GoReact.

When students begin a GoReact Assignment with Presenter Slides enabled, there is a button to select to add PDF slides when titling their assignment.

Students can drag their PDF slides into the upload space.

Students then select START to upload the PDF slides.

Students can then title their presentation and select CONTINUE.

Students next select Record and CONTINUE TO RECORDER.

GoReact then prompts students with instructions to use the arrows to advance slides while presenting. Students can read the message, then select Got It! to continue.

When students are ready, they can select the record button to begin recording. Students can change slides by either using the left and right arrows on either side of the slide, or choose the slide preview under the words Previous or Next.

4. Enter Grading & Evaluation

For this example, we will use the default selection of Points. Note that GoReact Assignment Points Possible must be set in the Canvas Edit window as shown in Edit the Assignment Settings above.

Enter Grading & Evaluation

5. Create recording and feedback instructions for students to follow.

Click +RECORDING INSTRUCTIONS from the right hand edit pane.

Note that selecting the "Single recording attempt (test)" option underneath the Points drop down box will limit students to one submission attempt regardless of your Canvas GoReact assignment being set to Unlimited.

  1. Type your assignment specific RECORDING instructions into the text box. For example, in an ice breaker video discussion assignment faculty can get students thinking about what they want to achieve by the end of the semester by asking students to respond to what course specific skills they want to work to improve on.

In order to access your student's GoReact submissions for grading, you must launch the assignment from the Load button on the assignment page. Only the number of points you enter for a student's submission will pass back to your Canvas GoReact assignment. Students will have to launch the assignment via the Load button to view instructor and peer comments.
