Randomizing Questions in Classic Quizzes with Question Groups

This article is for Faculty who want to create randomized exams for students using Canvas' Classic Quiz engine using Question Groups. Canvas refers to their testing engines as Quizzes. Quizzes in Canvas courses is where you will create and Publish all of your course exams. 1. Create a Classic Quiz and add a Question to a Question Group

1.2. Select + Quiz then Choose Classic Quizzes

(1) Select + Quiz in the upper right hand corner, then (2) choose Classic Quizzes. (3) Select Submit.

Note that "For the time being" underneath (2) Classic Quizzes appears because Canvas was planning to sunset Classic Quizzes and move over to New Quizzes. Canvas has decided to eliminate the deadline for switching to New Quizzes. You can rest assured you will be safe building and using Classic Quizzes for all your exams if you prefer.

1.3. Select the Questions Tab

(1) Name your Classic Quiz, then (2) select the Questions Tab.

1.4. Select + New Question to create a new Question

1.5. Edit Your Question

(1) Enter your Question in the Rich Content Editor, (2) enter answers, and (3) choose a correct answer. (4) Select Update Question to save your question. See Editing a Classic Quiz for more specific detail on creating Classic Quiz questions from scratch.

1.6. Select the + New Question Group Button

1.7. Name and configure your Question Group

(1) Enter a name for the Question Group, (2) pick the total number of questions that you place inside the Group (this can be edited later), (3) select points per question. (4) Select Create Group.

Note the message stating there are more questions selected in the group than are available. Select the dots to the left of a Question and drag it into the Question Group box in the white space.

1.9. Select  Find Questions to add Specific Questions to the Quiz

To continue creating new questions repeat steps 1.4 Select + New Question to create a new Question - 1.5 Edit Your Question . Select Find Questions to choose specific questions from Question Banks.

1.10. Selecting Find Questions allows Faculty to select from Question Banks

(1) Select a Question Bank,  (2) scroll through and choose questions by selecting a question's checkbox. (3) Scroll down further and choose the "Add Selected Questions" button.

1.11. Drag Questions into the Question Group

Select the dots to the left of a Question and drag each one into the Question Group box in the white space.

1.12. View Questions inside of the Question Group

Your questions now appear inside your Question Group. Be sure to select Save & Publish or Save at the bottom right when you have finished editing your Classic Quiz.

Do this a few times to verify randomization is working for the Question Group.

2. Create a Randomized Exam from a Question Bank Linked to a Question Group

Question Banks are Quiz question repositories to store your exam and quiz questions based on concept, unit, chapter, or however else you want to categorize material you  want to assess students on. Another way to randomize questions in a classic quiz is to link a Question Bank to a Question Group in your Classic Quiz.

2.1. Access Your Course Question Banks

Select Quizzes in course navigation, then (1) select the three dot kebab in the upper right hand corner. (2) Choose Manage Question Banks.

2.2. View Your Course Question Banks

You can (1) select the name of the Bank to view/edit the questions contained inside as well as add new questions. (2) Select the pencil to edit the name of the bank.

Scroll to the bottom of the page and select + New Question Group.

2.4. Name and Configure Your Question Group

(1) Name the Group, (2) pick the number of questions, (3) select points per question, (4) Select Link to a Question Bank.

2.5. Select a Question Bank from the Pop-up menu, then Choose Select Bank

Notice the bank selected with the red callout in the image below contains 80 questions. The Question Bank Group shown in the image above is set to pull 5 questions from this Bank of 80 total questions.

2.6. View the Question Group Linked to Your Question Bank

Canvas will randomly choose 5 questions from this bank of 80. Each student will be given five different questions chosen randomly from the Bank. You must select Create Group to save your settings.

2.7. Select Save in the bottom right corner to Save your Classic Quiz

Note that because this Question group is set to randomly pull 5 from the Comm 100 Question Bank, Canvas does not allow users to drag and drop other questions inside this question Group. The 10 other questions above this group will have to be placed inside a new question group if you wish to randomize them.
