Article Overview
1. Access the Settings Area in Your New Quiz
1.1. Select Quizzes in Course Navigation
1.2. Choose a New Quiz to Continue
New Quizzes can be identified by shaded rocket ships. Note that chapters 10 and 11 are New Quizzes; chapter 10 is published while chapter 11 is currently unpublished.
Select the text of a new quiz to continue.
1.3. Set Points for Your New Quiz
Enter the total number of points the New Quiz will be worth in the Points box.
1.4. Scroll down and enter Availability dates
Set Availability dates in the Assign box. Canvas allows you to set Due, Available from, and Until dates. By default, the New Quiz is assigned to everyone.
If you have students who require alternate quiz times outside of the range of time and scheduled day everyone else will take the exam, select the + Add button to select the student's name from your roster and enter an alternate time and date. This will ensure the student will be able to access the exam on the alternate date and time.
1.5. View the Assign to settings for Everyone and specific Students
Note the Assign to: Due, Available from, and Until dates for Sidney Norman (a test student) versus Everyone Else. Sidney is taking the exam on March 1, while everyone else will take it on February 28th. Read our article on Canvas Quiz Availability and Accommodations to learn more about setting up different Assign to dates for a New Quiz.
2. Configure Your Exam Settings
2.1. Select the Settings Tab from the top left
2.2. Configure the following five settings
These five settings (shown below) have no affect on student result view:
- Shuffle questions
- Shuffle answers
- One question at a time, and whether to enable or disable backtracking (allowing students to go back and change their answers).
- Set a time limit.
- Allow multiple attempts
Clicking an (x) to the left of the setting name will toggle that setting on and display a green checkmark.
Scroll down a bit to enable "Allow multiple attempts" if you would like to offer students more than one chance.
Enabling Allow multiple attempts requires you to set: Score to keep, number of Allowed attempts, and (optional) Waiting period between attempts.
After changing your settings, Canvas displays a save messages at the top of the screen stating: Success! Your quiz has been saved.
2.3. Scroll down and ensure Restrict student result view is toggled on
When the Restrict student result view option is toggled on with all the boxes below left unchecked, students only see submission confirmation when completing your New Quiz.
Note: Students can see their overall score in grades if faculty have their exam column in the grade book set to Automatically post grades to have not hidden that column from students. Read this article about hiding and posting grades in the Canvas gradebook for more information.
3. View the Student Perspective
The view below is of a test student after completing a New Quiz with Restrict student result view checked , as shown above in step 2.3. With the Restrict student result view green check mark selected and nothing else, all students see is the submission confirmation message after submitting their quiz.
3.1. Set your New Quiz to: Show points awarded (overall and per question)
Choose this setting if you would like to reveal only total scores to students when they submit New Quizzes.
The image below shows a test student's view submitting a New Quiz with show points awarded overall and per question chosen by faculty.
With show points awarded overall and per question chosen by faculty, students will only be able to view total points earned when selecting the quiz from Grades.
Students viewing New Quizzes set to show points awarded overall and per question from the Modules or Assignments areas of Canvas will be able to select a blue View Results button.
If the student selects View Results on a submitted New Quiz set to show points awarded overall and per question, they will still only see their total points earned and not any specific right/wrong answers.
3.2. Enable more Settings in your New Quiz to allow students to view question feedback
Once all your students have submitted the exam in New Quizzes, and you have finished grading all the exams, enable more check boxes in the Settings area to release correct/incorrect answers and your feedback left on individual questions.
The image below is a test student's perspective after the checkboxes above in step 3.2 have been selected and the faculty member released grades for students to view. In number 1, the red X shows an answer is incorrect. The correct answer is listed beneath it. Faculty feedback is displayed for the student now. Number 2 was answered correctly, displaying a green check mark.
