This article is for faculty who use rubrics to grade assignments.
Article Overview
Canvas allows faculty to create rubrics from the Rubrics page or while adding a rubric to an assignment. In this article, we will create a rubric from the Rubrics page.
1. Creating a Rubric
1.1. Navigate to the Course's Rubrics
Select the Rubrics tab, which can be found in the Course Navigation to the left in Canvas.
1.2. Create a New Rubric
Select + Add Rubric.
An area to create a new rubric will appear at the bottom of the Rubrics page. Add a title.
1.3. Add Criteria
Select the pencil icon under the Criteria column to name your first criterion.
In the Edit Criterion window, (1) enter the criterion name in the Description text box and, if desired, a description in the Long Description text box. You can give a description of each rating later. (2) Select Update Criterion.
1.4. Edit Ratings for a Criterion
To edit an existing rating, select the pencil icon in the highest rating box.
Edit the rating (1) score, (2) title, and (3) description if desired. Select (4) Update Rating.
Use the red plus sign to add a rating level and edit the information for the rating. Move from highest to lowest.
Unlike Blackboard rubrics, Canvas rubrics must have the lowest rating (or level of achievement) on the right.
When you have finished updating the ratings for a criterion, you can add a new criterion by selecting +Criterion.
Select New Criterion from the drop down menu and add a description. Then repeat the steps in Section 1.4 to add ratings to this criterion.
It is also possible to set the highest rating for a criterion by entering this number in the Pts box.
When you are finished adding criteria and editing the ratings, select Create Rubric.
Canvas lists criteria in a list of rows and ratings in columns. Attempting to put ratings into a vertical list of rows will result in the rubric totaling a higher than intended number of points.
2. Adding a Rubric to an Assignment
If you have an existing assignment, skip to Section 2.2.
2.1. Create an Assignment
From the Course Navigation Menu, select Assignments. Then select +Assignments to create a new assignment.
Add (1) a title, (2) prompt, (3) points, and (4) (optionally) an assignment group. Your rubric points and your assignment points should match.
Select a submission type. Rubrics can be attached to online, paper, and no submission types. Rubrics cannot be added to assignments creating external tools, but some tools include a rubric.
Add other assignment settings and Save or Save and Publish.
2.2. Attach a Rubric to an Assignment
If you are using an existing assignment, go to the Assignments page and click on the name of the assignment.
Once an assignment has been created, select +Rubric.
Select Find a Rubric. You can also create a new rubric for this assignment if you do not have an appropriate rubric for this assignment yet.
In the Find Existing Rubric window, select the course that has your target rubric, and select the rubric. This rubric will appear in the right side of the window.
Scroll down and select Use This Rubric.
By default, rubrics are a reference and the points that you enter in the rubric do not sync with the gradebook.
To sync a rubric with the gradebook, select the pencil icon.
The settings for how the rubric will be used with this assignment appear below the rubric. Select Use this rubric for assignment grading to sync the points entered in the rubric with the gradebook. Then select Update Rubric.
Students will be able to see this rubric when they access the assignment.
3. Using a Rubric to Grade an Assignment
3.1. Accessing Student Submissions from Speedgrader
After students have submitted assignments, go to Grades.
Search for your assignment in the Assignment Names search box. Select the assignment.
Select the three-dot kebab menu next to the assignment name. Then select Speedgrader.
To use the rubric as you grade an assignment, select the View Rubric button on the right side of the page.
Initially, Speedgrader may not display the entire rubric. Drag the edge of the vertical gray bar to show more of the rubric.
You can select a rating for each criterion or you can enter a score on the right side of the rubric. If you would like to assign a score that is in between the ratings available, enter the score on the Pts column on the right. In the example below, the square for 4 points was selected (which synced with the box on the right) and 3.5 was entered into the box in the right because it was between ratings.
Re-click a box to deselect it if you make a grading error.
To add comments to the rubric, select the comment icon.
Type comments clarifying a score for a criterion. In this example, the comments explain the reason that a score falls between two ratings.
When you are finished adding comments and choosing (or entering) scores for all of the criteria, select Save.
If you selected "Use rubric for assignment grading," you will see the total points in the Assessment area.
If you do not see a score in the Assessment area after saving your rubric ratings, you may need to go to the assignment and enable this feature from the assignment's rubric settings. Follow the steps below to enable this setting.
3.2. Enable "Use this rubric for assignment grading" for an Assignment with a Rubric
If you have an assignment with an attached rubric that was not set to use the rubric for assignment grading, you can change the setting. Select the assignment's name from the gradebook or find the assignment on the Assignments page. This example will show the former option.
Scroll down to the rubric that was already attached. Select the edit pencil.
After selecting the edit pencil for the assignment's rubric settings, (1) make sure that the option Use this rubric for assignment grading is checked and (2) select Update Rubric.
4. Adding a Rubric to a Graded Discussion
In Canvas, it is possible to add a rubric to a graded discussion. View this Canvas Community article to learn how to add a rubric to a graded discussion.
Once the rubric is added and the discussion is published, students will be able to view the rubric before participating in a discussion by (1) selecting the three-dot kebab menu next to an instructor's initial post and (2) selecting Show Rubric (see image below).
5. Using a Rubric to Grade a Discussion
5.1. Access Discussion Responses in Speedgrader
To grade student responses for a discussion, go to the Grades link from the course navigation menu.
Find the column for the discussion and select the three-dot kebab menu. Then choose Speedgrader.
5.2. View and Use a Rubric
Drag the page divider to the left to create more space for the rubric. Select View Rubric.
Rate each criterion by selecting the rating cells or by entering points in the Pts column on the right. Select Save.
If your rubric was set to be used for grading, you will see the total automatically appear in the Grade out of box after you saved your rubric ratings.
If you do not see the total points in the Grade out of box after you save your rubric ratings, it may not be set to be used for grading.
5.3. Change Settings to Sync a Rubric with the Gradebook
To make a discussion's rubric sync in the gradebook, go to the discussion and select the three-dot kebab menu next to your initial post. Choose Show Rubric.
Select the edit pencil for the rubric.
(1) Scroll down to the rubric's settings and (2) select Use this rubric for assignment grading. Then (3) select Update Rubric.
Close the assignment rubric details window.
Select the three-dot kebab menu next to the initial discussion post and select Open in Speedgrader. Follow the steps in Section 5.2 to sync the rubric's ratings with the gradebook.
6. Adding a Rubric to a Classic Quiz as a Reference
Canvas allows a single rubric to be added to evaluate an classic entire quiz. Rubrics cannot be added to individual quiz questions.
6.1. Adding a Single Rubric to a Classic Quiz
Students will not see the rubric when they access the quiz, so consider embedding a PDF or Doc with the rubric in the quiz's instructions area. It will become viewable to students after they take the quiz.
A single rubric can be added to a classic quiz. To add a rubric to a classic quiz, go to Quizzes and select the quiz to which you would like to add a rubric.
Select the three-dot kebab menu and choose Show Rubric.
Select Add Rubric.
Choose Find a Rubric.
Select a rubric.
Scroll down and make sure the correct rubric is selected on the right. Then select Use This Rubric.
Close the selected rubric.
Check to make sure that the rubric value (for example 3 points) matches the question value before making the quiz available to students.
6.2. View a Rubric While Grading a Classic Quiz
After students have taken the quiz, view their responses by going to Grades by selecting the link in the course navigation menu.
Select the three-dot kebab menu for the quiz and then choose Speedgrader.
Speedgrader will display (1) the question, (2) response, and (3) points on the left side of the page. To use the rubric as a reference, select (4) View Rubric on the right side of the page.
It is possible to give a rating to each criterion, but these points will not sync with the gradebook.
Assign points for each question in the question area on the left side of the page. Select Update Scores.
Unlike any points entered in the rubric, the scores entered on the left side of the page (see the image above) will sync with the gradebook once you have selected the Update Scores button.
If a classic quiz has multiple questions, consider attaching the rubric as a grading reference and using the points and comments area to clarify how each question was graded.
7. Adding a Rubric to a New Quiz
Unlike with classic quizzes, it is possible to calculate the score for an entire new quiz using a single rubric.
7.1. Adding a Rubric to a New Quiz
Students will not see the rubric when they access the quiz, so consider embedding a PDF or Doc with the rubric in the quiz's instructions area. It will become viewable to students after they take the quiz.
To add a rubric for grading to a quiz, go to the Quizzes page.
Select the link for a new quiz you would like to add a rubric to. In this example, the new quiz has one essay question and no other questions.
Scroll down past the assignment dates. Select + Rubric.
On the right side of the page, select Find a Rubric. Alternatively, you can create a new rubric following the steps in Sections 1.2-1.4.
In the Find Existing Rubric window, choose your course and a rubric. Then select Use This Rubric.
The attached rubric will now appear below the assignment dates. By default, points entered in a rubric's points column will not sync with the gradebook. Learn how to use a rubric to grade a new quiz in Section 7.2. Learn how to use a rubric as a reference only in Section 7.3.
Be sure that the quiz's total points, question points total, and rubric total all match up to avoid grading confusion.
7.2. Using a Rubric to Grade a New Quiz
Students will not see the rubric when they access the quiz, so consider embedding a PDF or Doc with the rubric in the quiz's instructions area. It will become viewable to students after they take the quiz.
To use the rubric for grading, select the edit pencil.
A set of checkboxes will appear below the rubric. Check Use this rubric for assignment grading and then select Update Rubric.
Points entered for a rubric used for assignment grading can overwrite points assigned by question. The gradebook will sync with whichever action (updating points or saving rubric ratings) was done most recently. If you have a quiz with a large number of questions that will be autograded, consider putting the autograded questions into one quiz and the rubric graded question(s) in a separate quiz to avoid grading errors.
After students have submitted their quizzes, go to Grades.
Select the three-dot kebab menu for the quiz's column and select Speedgrader.
Drag the divider to increase the area for the right side of the screen and then select View Rubric.
(1) Choose ratings for each criterion by either selecting a rating cell or entering points on the right. (2) Then select Save.
Because the rubric was set to be used for grading, the score will appear in the Assessment box. This score will also sync with the gradebook.
In the above example, one matrix-style rubric was used to grade a single essay question. To use a rubric when assigning points to a new quiz with multiple questions, consider either only using the rubric as a reference, shown in Section 7.3 or create a rubric that has a criterion for each question. A multi-question rubric is shown below:
When grading a quiz that uses a multi-question rubric, be sure to either assign points on the left or enter points on the rubric. In the example below, a value for each criterion (and in this case, question) is assigned in the rubric on the right even for the question which was autograded on the left.
Select Save so that the rubric total will sync with the grade in the gradebook.
7.3. Using a Rubric as a Reference for a New Quiz
A less complex approach to grading a new quiz with multiple questions is to only use a rubric as a reference and calculate the score for a quiz by assigning points to each question; a question's comment area can be used to clarify scoring choices.
Follow the steps in Section 5.1 to add a rubric to a quiz. By default, it will not sync with the gradebook. Once students have submitted the quiz, select Grades from the course navigation menu.
Find the column for your quiz, select the three-dot kebab menu, and then choose Speedgrader.
In this example, the rubric was not set to be used for grading. To use a rubric as a reference, drag the page divider left and then select View Rubric.
Score each question. Consider referencing your criteria categories in the comments area to clarify your grading decisions. Do not use the rubric on the right; it functions for the whole quiz rather than an individual question.
Finish scoring questions and select Update. This will update your final score.
