Taking a Canvas Quiz with Respondus Lockdown Browser

This article is for students taking Canvas quizzes with Respondus LockDown Browser. Respondus LockDown Browser is software that ensures that a test-taker is not accessing outside materials. Your instructor may also require Respondus Monitor, which uses a webcam.

Respondus LockDown Browser Quick Tips:

  • Install the California State University - East Bay version of LockDown Browser before your exam date.
  • Give LockDown Browser permission to access your microphone and camera.
  • For a Classic Quiz (see Image 1 below), open the LockDown Browser app on your device before logging into Canvas.
  • For a New Quiz (see Image 2 below)  open an up-to-date standard browser, log into Canvas, and then access the quiz; you will be prompted to open LockDown Browser from a popup window.

1. Install LockDown Browser

Select a device that is compatible with Respondus LockDown Browser.

Smartphones and some tablets are not compatible with LockDown Browser. Laptop and desktop computers will need to meet system requirements.

If you do not already have the CSU East Bay version of LockDown Browser on your device, visit the download page for LockDown Browser using a link provided by your instructor.

1.2. Install LockDown Browser

Make sure the version is appropriate for your device: PC or Mac. Also, be sure the Install column has the text: "Install LockDown Browser for California State University - East Bay."

Even if you have downloaded Respondus LockDown Browser to take assessments at another school, you will need to download the California State University - East Bay version of the application.

Read the Respondus Inc. License Agreement. Then select Install Now.

Select the installation file from your browser or your recent downloads. Follow the setup instructions as prompted by your device.

Make sure your device is set to allow LockDown Browser to access your camera and microphone. If you are using a Mac, you will need to give permission in System Preferences.

2. Access and Take a Classic Canvas Quiz with LockDown Browser

For accessing and taking a New Canvas Quiz with LockDown Browser, jump to step 2.4.

2.1. Open LockDown Browser and Log into Canvas

(1) Go to your device's program's list or launchpad and (2) search for LockDown Browser. On some devices, you may have a LockDown Browser desktop icon.

(3) Select the LockDown Browser App to open it.

On some PCs, you may be asked if you want to allow  the LockDown Browser App to make changes to your webcam and microphone.

Choose your course's learning management system from the dropdown menu. In this example, the course is in Canvas, so CSUEB Canvas Prod is chosen.  Select Continue.

2.2. Select Your Course and Quiz

Select your course from the dashboard.

Select Modules to find your quiz. Select your quiz from its module. It will have the text "with LockDown Browser" in its title.

If the title includes "+ Webcam," use the directions in Section 3.

You may also be able to access the quiz from the course's To Do list on the course Home page or the Quizzes link if it is available to you in the course navigation menu. Learn more about Classic Quizzes here.

2.3. Take the Quiz with LockDown Browser

Select Take the Quiz.

Review your exam and make sure you have answered all questions. Select the Submit Quiz button.

Once you have submitted your quiz, you will see your attempt history. You can close LockDown Browser by selecting the red x in the upper left corner.

The next section is for those taking a New Canvas Quiz.

2.4. Access and Take a New Canvas Quiz with LockDown Browser

2.5. Select Your Course and Quiz

Select the course that has an available quiz that requires Respondus LockDown Browser.

Select Modules to find your quiz. Select your quiz from its module. It will have the text "with LockDown Browser" in its title.

If the title includes "+Webcam," use the directions in Take a New Canvas Quiz Using LockDown Browser + Webcam.

You may also be able to access the quiz from the course's To Do list on the course home page or the Quizzes link if it is available to you in the course navigation menu. Learn more about New Quizzes here.

2.6. Open LockDown Browser

Some standard browsers prevent popups. Make sure popup windows from Respondus LockDown Browser are permitted.

2.7. Take the Quiz with LockDown Browser

After you have selected your quiz and selected Open LockDown Browser, you may be prompted to close all other applications. Select Close Applications (on a Mac) or Close Processes (on a PC).

Select Begin.

Review your exam and make sure you have answered all questions. Then select Submit.

A popup will ask you to confirm your submission. Select the Submit button if you are finished with the quiz.

Once you have submitted your quiz, you will see your attempt history. You may close LockDown Browser.

3. Access and Take a Classic Canvas Quiz with LockDown Browser + Webcam

If you are required to use a webcam during your quiz, make sure you have a student ID or other form of picture identification. You may need to use your webcam to provide a 360 degree environment scan.

For accessing and taking a New Canvas Quiz with LockDown Browser + Webcam, jump to section 3.4

3.1. Start LockDown Browser and Log into Canvas

Select your course from your Canvas Dashboard.

Select Modules to find your quiz. Select your quiz from its module. It will have the text "with LockDown Browser + Webcam" in its title.

3.3. Start the Quiz

Select Take the Quiz.

Read and agree to the Terms of Use.

The next section is for those taking a New Canvas Quiz. If you're taking a Classic Canvas Quiz, jump to section 3.9.

3.4. Take a New Canvas Quiz Using LockDown Browser + Webcam

Your instructor may require you to use LockDown Browser with the webcam monitoring feature; the title of a quiz with this feature will have the text Requires Respondus LockDown Browser + Webcam.

LockDown Browser + Webcam will require identity authentication before the exam and take screenshots throughout the exam via webcam.

3.5. Login to Canvas

3.6. Select Your Course and Quiz

Select the course that has an available quiz that requires Respondus LockDown Browser.

Select Modules to find your quiz. Select your quiz from its module. It will have the text "with LockDown Browser + Webcam" in its title.

3.7. Open LockDown Browser

3.8. Start LockDown Browser and the Quiz

After you have selected your quiz and selected Open LockDown Browser, you may be prompted to close all other applications. Select Close Applications.

If you have not already given LockDown Browser permission to access your camera and microphone, you will be prompted to do so. On some devices you may need to quit LockDown Browser to change your camera and microphone permissions.

Select Begin.

3.9. Do a Webcam Check

Read and agree to the terms of use.

You will be prompted with: a webcam check, guidelines and tips, a webcam photo, a webcam photo with student card/ID, a 360 environment check, and a facial detection check:

Allow LockDown Browser to check your webcam by recording a five second video of you speaking.

Read the Additional Instructions Respondus provides as notice for succeeding on a locked down and monitored exam.

Read LockDown Browser's test taking guidelines and tips. Select the dots at the bottom of the page or the Next button to advance to the next tip.

Take a picture of yourself using your webcam, focusing on your face. If the steps look different, please view the Respondus training video.

Take a photo of yourself holding your ID. Then select Continue.

Select Start Recording and then your webcam to show all of your environment.

Do a facial detection check using your webcam.

In LockDown Browser, select Begin Exam.

3.10. Answer Quiz Questions and Submit

Review your exam and make sure you have answered all questions. Then select the Submit Quiz button.

You will be notified that the webcam recording is complete and you will be prompted to take a survey about your experience using LockDown Browser. Take the survey and select Submit.

Close LockDown Browser by selecting the red x in the upper left corner.
