Moving & Sharing Panopto Videos from Past Enrolled Courses to Current Courses

This article is for Faculty who want to move or share Panopto videos from a past enrolled course folder to an upcoming or current course in Canvas. Start here to access steps for moving videos from your Meeting Recordings folder in Panopto to one of your current courses. Please note that while the copy function is available in Panopto, Online Campus recommends that faculty who want to have the same lecture videos from a past enrollment available to students in a current or new enrollment, either move or share those videos from the past enrolled course to the current or new enrollment to save storage space.


1. Access Your Panopto Link and Meeting Recordings Folder

Select the Panopto Video link from Course Navigation to the left in Canvas.

1.3. Choose the Arrow for "My Folder" then Select "Meeting Recordings"from the Dropdown

For faculty who have their Zoom lectures set to record to the cloud, accessing the My Folder icon and choosing the Meeting Recordings folder in your Panopto account will display recently recorded lectures. Note that this is set up the same whether you are teaching in Blackboard or Canvas.

The Meeting Recordings folder is used as an interim storage space for all your cloud recorded Zoom lectures. It is best practice move recorded Zoom lectures from all the courses you teach to their respective main course folders in Panopto.

2. Select Videos to Move to a Current or New Course

First (1), select the upper left corner of videos you would like to move to your main class folders in Panopto. Next (2), select the move button to continue.

Note, while the copy function is available in Panopto, Online Campus recommends that faculty who want to have the same lecture videos from a past enrollment available to students in a current or new enrollment, move those videos from the past enrolled course to the current or new enrollment to save storage space. Panopto now has set storage limits on our institutional account.

Click the (1) main drop down for the search box, then (2) the Canvas drop down and  (3) select the destination course folder to which you would like to move your video(s) to.

The videos you moved will appear in your main Panopto folder for the course you moved them to. The same course ID, sandbox-aelabed2, appears at top left in Canvas and in the main Panopto folder (both are circled in red).

Keep in mind you must keep your Panopto Video link available in Course Navigation for students to access the videos you moved to your course folder. If you disable your Panopto video link in your course settings, you must follow our guide on how to Add Panopto Video to a Page.

Blackboard users can close their Panopto browser tabs and relaunch Panopto from their Blackboard courses to view videos in course main folders. Canvas users can navigate back to Canvas and refresh the browser to view moved videos in the main course folder.


3. Share Panopto Videos to Other Courses You Teach

If you teach multiple sections of the same course, Canvas allows faculty to insert external URL links inside of Modules. All faculty need to do is enable sharing on the course folder with the videos, then copy and paste the link to the folder in the other sections' Modules.

Select that course's Modules link in Course Navigation. Select the + icon on the module you would like to add the Panopto video link to.

3.6. Select External URL from the Add Dropdown Menu

(1) Paste the URL into the URL box, (2) Name the page, and (3) select Add Item.

Make sure to select the name of the link and test it to make sure it opens properly, and select the circle with a slash through it to publish the module. Notice the link is displaying a green checkmark indicating it is published and available for students. Students won't be able to access this link until the circle with a slash through it on the gray module is clicked to a green check mark and published.

Selecting the "Open (name of link file) in a new window" button will take you and your viewers to your Panopto folder containing the videos in the section you moved them to from your Meeting Recordings folder in Panopto.

Looking at the screenshot above, faculty can hover their cursor over specific videos and share to other courses they teach.
